When doing genealogy, not every story you learn about your family is nice.
W. G. Brownlow was a well-known proponent of slavery until it split the country in two. He defended slavery and wrote many scurrilous newspaper articles about anti-slavery advocates. In 1853, Harriet Beecher Stowe entered his cross-hairs and Brownlow declared her a “deliberate liar” and a woman of questionable virtue.
However, thirty years later, in 1883. Harriet’s brother, Henry Ward Beecher and his wife were guests at Annie’s home in Leadville for a few days.
