This summer, while looking at business directories for Pittsburgh, I found that the 1815 directory listed “Patrick James, mason” in Lawrenceville, PA, on the north side of Pittsburgh. The family lore never mentioned Lawrenceville. However, looking through the directory, I noticed that the masons and stone cutters (about five or six) were all located in Lawrenceville. Capt. A. R. Wolley, U.S. Ordinance Dept. was also listed in Lawrenceville.
So I went looking on the Internet and found that the Allegheny Arsenal was built in 1814! So that is why all the masons and stone cutters were there.

Patrick Family Lore had said that William(1) Patrick and Eliza McCall were married on Feb. 29, 1844 in Steubenville, OH. However, I found out that they were actually married in Temperanceville, PA!!!
This new info came about through Ancestry.com. They had a hints for William and Eliza about a marriage in 1847 in St. Louis. I had ignored the hints for awhile, but then looked at it the other day. What I found was that it pointed to their marriage being recorded in St. Louis in 1881!! The date and names of the people involved were the same, but the place shown was Temperanceville, PA in the McCall home.
I don’t have a clue as to why William and Eliza felt the need to record their marriage in St. Louis 37 years after they were married, but it is good they did. Now we have a reliable record of the marriage AND it clears up another question I had.
The 1839 business directory for Pittsburgh and nearby towns listed “Patricks J & W, merch.” in Temperanceville. I was wondering if this was James(2) and William(1) in business in Temperance. With William being married four years later in Temperance, then I think the entry was the brothers in business together.
