Using Ancestry.com and Google Books, I have looked at business directories for Knoxville and Philadelphia to look for Mrs. Dougherty, the woman who made Annie’s wedding dress. There isn’t any dressmaker by the name of Dougherty in Knoxville, but there is an Ellen Dougherty in Philadelphia.
Since Annie attended and then taught at the Chestnut Seminary in Philadelphia, it makes sense that she had a relationship with a dressmaker in Philadelphia. Mrs. Dougherty does not appear to have been a big, society dressmaker. But from the wedding dress, I can attest that she was talented.
